BODY DISSATISFACTION: DON'T TAKE IT PERSONALLY! AN EVALUATION OF THE ACCEPTABILITY AND UTILITY OF TWO STRATEGIES PUTTING BODY DISSATISFACTION INTO DESCRIPTIVE CONTEXTS

The high prevalence and damaging consequences of body dissatisfaction, including its association with eating disorders, depression, stress and anxiety, are widely reported. Associated feelings of low self-worth cause considerable and well-documented distress, particularly to young women, the focus of the current study. To date, most interventions to reduce body dissatisfaction have assumed an intrinsic, static and schema-related 'faultiness' in those with body dissatisfaction. Two approaches, presented for evaluation in this study, aimed to relocate the body dissatisfaction issue away from the personal, to contexts where it could be understood as a mutable, context-dependent construct. The two approaches were mindfulness (Mindfulness strategy) and media literacy with a social constructionist feminist perspective (CML strategy), designed to be accessible to large populations. They were presented as written materials to 73 young women, who read them and evaluated them for acceptability and perceived usefulness in addressing body dissatisfaction. Participants were first assessed, using self-report measures of body dissatisfaction, drive for thinness, depression, anxiety, stress, self-esteem, selfcompassion, life satisfaction, mindful awareness, and autonomy. They then evaluated the two strategies in a survey. Mindfulness was chosen for perceived effectiveness and acceptability by 68.6% of the sample, with CML chosen by the remainder. CML was endorsed by 65% of the sample as a preventative strategy for young adolescents. The Mindfulness group was higher in depression than the CML group, and the CML group higher in weight concern, but the two groups did not vary on other variables. Previous knowledge of mindfulness or meditation did not influence participants' choice of strategy but knowledge of media literacy was found to deter participants from choosing CML. Body esteem was found to be highly correlated with life satisfaction in the sample.

Bottlenecks in the brain: An individual differences approach to the relationship between the attentional blink and the psychological refractory period

Due to our capacity-limited attentional resources, in any given moment, we are only aware of a fraction of the visual information in our environment. Such capacity limitations are reflected in the Attentional Blink (AB): a deficit in reporting the second of two targets in a Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) stream when they appear within 200-500 ms of each other. A secondary deficit occurs at the stage of decision-making: the Psychological Refractory Period (PRP) is a slowing in response time to the second of two (unmasked) targets at short Stimulus Onset Asynchronies (SOAs). These two paradigms have traditionally been investigated separately, however more recent work has examined their relationship. It has been theorised that the AB and PRP may tap a single underlying bottleneck, however non-standard paradigms have been employed, limiting previous studies. The present work used an individual differences approach to assess whether typical AB tasks and a standard PRP paradigm tap the same cognitive limitation. It was observed that while there was high reliability for each task and all tasks correlated on target 1 performance, only the categorical and featural AB magnitudes were related. This indicates that these tasks reflect discrete limitations relative to the hybrid AB paradigm and the visual-manual PRP paradigm. Furthermore this PRP paradigm appears to tap distinct limitations to the AB tasks. These results have important implications regarding theories of temporal attention, as there appears to be multiple bottlenecks of selective attention.

Can the Relational Account of Visual Attention Explain Capture Over and Above Singleton Detection Mode Search?

Evidence exists in the involuntary capture of visual attention that observer top down templates extend to include relational information of search targets to their surrounding environment. Conversely, competing models hold attention as being automatically guided to the most salient items in display (odd men out) engaging observers in a singleton search. A centrally supportive finding in this singleton detection account is via capture of irrelevant distractors despite their marked dissimilarity to the target. In a recent study, these capture effects have been taken as evidence observers actively tuned towards stimuli feature contrasts, upholding attention as purely stimulus driven. However findings are also consistent with the relational account in which observer attention is tuned via a top down relation set, to the relational properties of stimuli. This alternative relational explanation was tested in two experiments via modification of the originally engaged spatial cueing paradigm designed to split model predictions. Results reflected some evidence of observer tuning towards stimuli's relational properties, with implications for theoretical models discussed.

Can training improve the hazard perception ability of learner and non-drivers, under a distraction condition?

The current research investigated whether video-based training could improve the hazard perception of learners and non-drivers. Participants were randomly allocated to a training or control condition. Within each group, half of the participants engaged in a distracter task to simulate the cognitive load associated with being a novice driver. Gaze direction was monitored with an eye-tracker and participants' first fixation point and response reaction times were measured in relation to the appearance of each traffic hazard on the computer screen, both pre- and post-training. In line with hypotheses, hazard perception training significantly improved fixation and reaction time responses, and significantly reduced the processing interval between fixation and response production. However, against predictions, engaging in a distracter task did not significantly impede fixation or response reaction times, and did not have a significant effect on the interval between first fixation and response production. Furthermore, no support was found for the prediction that the distracter task would substantially attenuate the training effect, but not eliminate it entirely, as no group differences reached significance. These findings are discussed in relation to novice drivers' situation awareness, with particular reference to the perception, comprehension, and projection components of working memory. Potential implications for graduated licencing systems are also discussed.

Can You See It? An investigation into the effects of implicit temporal information and our ability to allocate attentional resources.

We live in a visually complex world, with more information available than we are able to process simultaneously. While many laboratory experiments have confirmed these limitations, relatively little work has investigated potential strategies to overcome them. The present paper aimed to investigate if we are better able to allocate our attention, in order to overcome some of the limitations of visual perception. In experiment one, 22 participants viewed a stream of number distractors, and two letter targets in a traditional Attentional blink paradigm. Within one condition there was increasing probability that the second target would appear at different points in time. Whereas in the other condition the probability of the second target occurring was held constant across trials. The participants were required to correctly identify both the first and second targets. The results indicated that there was no difference in participant accuracy between the two conditions. In the second experiment we created a more sensitive measure to address issues raised within the first. 36 Participants took part in a similar paradigm to the first experiment. However, the dependent measure of reaction time to the second target was included. The results found a general trend, which indicated that the participants were able to use implicit information to improve their performance.

Capitalisation changes, valuation and market efficiency : Australian evidence / by Jason Valmadre.

In this thesis, share price movements are examined around the announcement of certain capitalisation changes. Previous Australian evidence in this area by Ball, Brown and Finn (1977) suggests that the equity market is efficient in both its timing (assessed using monthly data) and in its pricing of share splits, bonus and rights issues. That is, share prices adjust rapidly to reflect changes in expected future cash flows as modelled by changes in effective aggregate dividends paid to equity holders. This study extends Ball Brown and Finn (1977) by using daily data to examine not only share splits, bonus and rights issues but consolidations (reverse splits) as well. The two major findings are as follows: 1. the Australian equity market reacts quickly (normally within one trading day of the announcement) to incorporate unanticipated information regarding future cash flows conveyed by the abovementioned capitalisation announcements; and 2. that (assuming an efficient market) a signalling model based on year ahead changes in dividend policy alone does not capture all information priced by investors at the announcement date. This is so particularly in the case of equity issues (bonus and rights) where it is conjectured that Australian Stock Exchange Listing Rule requirements cause confounding, simultaneous firm-specific information to be released which is priced by investors.

Cash holdings in the time of financial crisis

This study examines the impact of cash holdings on financing investments and firm value using data from publicly traded U.S. firms over the period from 1990 to 2010. This issue is investigated in the context of the financial crisis compared to the pre-crisis period. The theoretical ground for this study is market imperfections. The sample is classified based on firm’s financial constraint status. In light of the substantial reduction in bank lending and the higher information asymmetry during the crisis, a set of hypotheses is developed. We provide empirical evidence that firms rely more on internal liquidity to finance their investments in the presence of greater market imperfections. We also find evidence that the equity market places a higher value on corporate cash holdings during the financial crisis. We present some evidence that the value of cash varies with financial constraint status, but the pattern appears to be less pronounced during the crisis. There is little evidence that the constraint effect on investments is affected by the financial crisis.
