A cross-level model of the relationship between followers' relational schema and leaders' affect and outcomes http://espace.library.uq.edu.au/view/UQ:276893 Research on leadership has constantly indicated that leaders often engage in differing behaviours in the process of influencing their followers. In particular, the Leader-Member Exchange (LMX) theory describes the process of leaders developing differentiated relationship quality with each member. However, knowledge is limited on the antecedents of the relationship quality differences. Similarly, few studies have examined the influence of member's schema in leader's relational schema especially in an LMX context. In addition, although there has been a surge of interest in the role of emotions in leadership, however, little research has investigated affect and emotional regulation of the leaders in the leader-member relationship. Using LMX and role theories as theoretical frameworks, this research seeks to fill these conceptual gaps by building and testing a cross-level model of member's relational schema at the individual level and leader's relational schema at the team level. In addition, a moderated mediation model of the effects of leader's affect and leader’s emotional regulation in the relationship between member’s schematic assessment of their leaders and leader's outcomes (i.e. leader's perception of LMX quality and their self-efficacy) was also built and tested. Data were collected from 311 pairs of dyads in a military organisation in the Asia Pacific. Results from the study demonstrated evidence that member's relational schema (at the individual level) influenced leader's relational schema (at the team level) while member's schema was related to leader's positive and negative affect. Positive affect also successfully mediated the link between member's relational schema and leader's LMX quality and self- efficacy while leader's reappraisal and suppression moderated the link between leader's positive affect and leaders LMX quality and self-efficacy. Overall, this research has extended literature in areas of LMX and emotions and should assist leaders in developing higher quality leader-member relationship that is critical for achieving productive organisational outcomes. 2012-07-02T00:00:00Z Pam P. Adopting the principles of ‘Crew Resource Management’ to the offshore drilling industry http://espace.library.uq.edu.au/view/UQ:184922 This report recommends a strategy for the introduction of aviation style Crew Resource Management (CRM) to the offshore drilling industry. The purpose of this study was to investigate ways CRM could be applied to the offshore drilling industry as a means of mitigating the risks of human error, and in particular risks to health and safety. Research has been conducted in accordance with accepted social science research methodologies. Key processes involved a formal literature review plus the formation of a Nominal Reference Group and application of the Delphi Technique as the primary data gathering method. Case studies have been used throughout this report to provide examples of key points and to illustrate the need for effective management of human error in both the aviation and drilling industries. Results from this study provided the basis for the development of a preferred implementation plan as a practical means for adopting the principles of CRM to the offshore drilling industry.
