Said to be the strongest epitaph in Australia. [Information courtesy of Newcastle City Council site] Michael Ryan was a blacksmith in St Canice's Parish, Thornback, County Kilkenny, Ireland. When a man was murdered with shot made from the heads of horseshoe nails, Michael ryan was convicted primarily because he had access to horseshoe nails. He was sentenced to transportation to Australia. His brother Phillip, convinced of Michael's innocence, came to Australia as a free settler & took up land in the Hunter Valley at Swan Reach where Michael was assigned to him as a convict. The brothers lived together & it was the hope of both to prove Michael's innocence. Tragically, before this could be done, Michael was drowned in the Hunter River. In an effort to vindicate his brother's name, Phillip erected the headstone as a silent reminder of the injustice done to Michael Ryan. (Newcastle Herald 27 Dec 1979).
