Civil Rights: How Indigenous Australians Won Formal Equality

This is chapter 1 of Civil Rights: How Indigenous Australians Won Formal Equality by John Chesterman. Australians know very little about how Indigenous Australians came to gain the
civil rights that other Australians had long taken for granted. One of the key reasons for this is the entrenched belief that civil rights were handed to Indigenous people and not won by them. In
this book John Chesterman draws on government and other archival material from around the country to make a compelling case that Indigenous people, together with non-Indigenous supporters, did
effectively agitate for civil rights, and that this activism, in conjunction with international pressure, led to legal reforms. Chesterman argues that these struggles have laid important
foundations for future dealings between Indigenous people and Australian governments.

Collected Poems

This is the introduction and a sample of the poetry from Gwen Harwood Collected Poems edited by Alison Hoddinott and Gregory Kratzmann. This definitive collection is a bumper edition
of over 600 pages of published and previously uncollected poems, many illuminated by the poet's own notes. Harwood's pseudonymous selves have made literary history, most famously perhaps as Walter
Lehmann whose Bulletin acrostic "f*#k" - once deciphered - rocked the Establishment. This collection is the product of diligent research by Harwood scholars Alison Hoddinott and Gregory Kratzmann,
both longtime friends of the poet. Their editorial introduction places Gwen Harwood, who died in 1995, among the most formidable literary talents of our age.

Creating Frames: Contemporary Indigenous Theatre, 1967-97

This is the introduction to Creating Frames: Contemporary Indigenous Theatre 1967-97 by Maryrose Casey. Since the late 1960s there have been hundreds of contemporary theatre productions of dozens of scripts by artists who identify as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. Through official policies from apartheid through assimilation to multiculturalism and thence into the highly politicised 1990s in the wake of Mabo, Deaths in Custody Report, and the Bringing Them Home Report, Indigenous Australian theatre artists have created dynamic ways to tell their stories on Australian stages. This book is the first social and cultural history of the theatre created by Indigenous Australian artists. Based on interviews with practitioners including Bob Maza, Jack Charles, Gary Foley, Justine Saunders, Wesley Enoch and John Harding and archival research, the book tells the story of Indigenous Australians producing theatre in the twentieth century. From isolated attempts to achieve production in the 1960s through the development of Indigenous companies in the 1970s to the establishment of Indigenous playwrights as important contributors to theatre on national and international stages in the 1980s and 1990s. The story tells the story behind the creation of a substantial body of work that has made a major contribution to Australian theatre and played an important role in ensuring that indigenous voices are heard.

Einstein's Heroes

This is chapter 1 of Einstein's Heroes by Robyn Arianrhod. Imagine you are fluent in a language so powerful that, when you write it down, it mysteriously takes on a life of its own,
beyond your thoughts or control. A magical language of prophecy, with which you can accurately describe things you cannot yet see or even imagine. Einstein's Heroes blends science, history and
biography to take you on a journey of discovery about the phenomenon of mathematics - humanity's universal language and one of our most amazing accomplishments. It uses as its axis the lives and
work of the brilliant scientists who inspired Einstein, particularly James Clerk Maxwell, Michael Faraday and Isaac Newton. Together, Maxwell and Faraday settled a centuries-old physical dispute,
which Newton had left in his majestic wake, and established mathematics as the ultimate arbiter of physical reality. "Arianrhod combines a passion for her subject with an erudition that is rare for
a storyteller. I swear my IQ was up 20 points when I'd finished." - Robyn Williams, Presenter, The Science Show "Arianrhod brings to her subject so much care, intelligence, attentiveness,
enthusiasm and simmering excitement that the book reads like a good novel ... Einstein's Heroes is a remarkable, accessible, inspiring new book." - Jane Gleeson-White, Sydney Morning Herald "A
terrific book for stroppy teens demanding to know why they should learn any of this stuff, or literate adults who wish to be more numerate." Michelle Griffin, The Age "Robyn Arianrhod's passion for
mathematics is so infectious, you'll scream 'Eureka' when you read her book." Blanche Clark, Herald-Sun

Frontier Justice: A History of the Gulf Country to 1900

This is chapter 1 of Frontier Justice: A History of the Gulf Country to 1900 by Tony Roberts. Frontier Justice brings a fresh perspective to the Northern Territory's remarkable
frontier era. For the newcomer, the Gulf country - from the Queensland border to the overland telegraph line, and from the Barkly Tableland to the Roper River - was a harsh and in places impassable
wilderness. To explorers like Leichhardt, it promised discovery, and to bold adventurers like the overlanders and pastoralists, a new start. For prospectors in their hundreds, it was a gateway to
the riches of the Kimberley goldfields. To the 2,500 Aboriginal inhabitants, it was their physical and spiritual home. From the 1870s, with the opening of the Coast Track, cattlemen eager to lay
claim to vast tracts of station land brought cattle in massive numbers and destruction to precious lagoons and fragile terrain. Black and white conflict escalated into unfettered violence and
retaliation that would extend into the next century, displacing, and in some areas destroying, the original inhabitants. The vivid characters who people this meticulously researched and compelling
history are indelibly etched from diaries and letters, archival records and eyewitness accounts. Included are maps with original place names, and previously unpublished photographs and
illustrations. "Frontier Justice is a very powerful and important book. It appears at a particularly significant time given the intense current debate about Aboriginal history. It is essential
reading for anyone with an interest in the story of the Australian frontier." - Professor Henry Reynolds "A commanding study of race relations in the remote Gulf country. Tony Roberts uncovers
compelling evidence of a litany of violence across some forty-odd years of rough borderlands dispossession in an encompassing, powerful and disturbing history." - Professor Raymond

Goodbye Bussamarai: The Mandandanji Land War - Southern Queensland, 1842-1852

This is the introduction and bibliography to Goodbye Bussamarai: The Mandandanji Land War. Southern Queensland, 1842-1852 by Patrick Collins. Bussamarai was a powerful resistance leader whose influence spread across five Aboriginal nations. Like the legendary Pemulwuy, Yagan or Jandamara, he fought for the survival of his people, the Mandandanji of southern Queensland. Their homeland bordered northern New South Wales and its infamous sites of Aboriginal massacre and frontier warfare: Myal Creek, Slaughterhouse Creek and Waterloo Creek. This history serves as a sequel to those artrocities, so unforgettably chronicled in Roger Milliss's "Waterloo Creek". Closely researched and finely grained, this is the first analysis of this fierce leader and the Mandandanji whose valiant fight for their homeland led to their decimation. Collins brings the violent struggle for land to graphic life, piecing together clues of a part suppressed or forgotten. Unearthed is the full scale of a tragic chronology of bloody "bushwhacks", racial wars and the dreaded Native Police. Led by white officers, and armed with guns and swords, they were party to the destruction of countless indigenous societies. More than an account, this is a story enriched by the author's speculations on racial violence and the psychological effects of a massacre in 19th century Australia.

Inventing Anzac: The Digger and National Mythology

This is chapter 9 of Inventing Anzac: The Digger and National Mythology by Graham Seal. Anzac and the digger lie at the centre of Australian national identity. Separate but
intertwined, their respective traditions have generated and maintained a potent mythology that becomes more embedded in Australian culture each April 25. Through an examination of the folk
traditions of the digger and the institutional tradition of Anzac, this book traces the origins and development of that mythology in the culture and everyday life of Australia in both war
and peace. Inventing Anzac draws on a variety of documentary, folkloric, literary and media sources to present a fresh view of the national mythology. This includes excavating the origins
and development of Anzac Day itself, the distinctive culture of the digger and the continuation of digger lore into World War Two and Vietnam. The book concludes with a contemporary case
study of the continuing power of Anzac to connect everyday Australian life and belief with the long-ago but not forgotten landings at a place called Gallipoli. Graham Seal is Associate
Professor in the Australia Research Institute at Curtin University of Technology, Perth, Western Australia. His published works deal mostly with cultural history and folklore in Australia
          and internationally.
