A New Britannia

This is the preface and introduction to the fourth edition of A New Britannia by Humphrey McQueen. 'Cock-eyed and parochial' Donald Horne labelled this provocative book when it was first published - a few years after his own celebrated Lucky Country. This stimulating new edition of Humphrey McQueen's irreverent classic charts the origins of the Australian Labor Party. In tracing the social forces that produced the ALP, he shows it was anti-socialist from the very start. Along the way he reveals a colonial passion for pianos and uncovers the proto-fascist ideas behind Henry Lawson's popular writings. An expanded Afterword brings the ALP into the current phase of globalising. Racism rears its many heads throughout this challenging story, and Humphrey McQueen shows that the desire for land was the basis for much of what passed as radicalism and socialism. For Australians, it would seem the land boom has never ended.

This is the introduction and bibliography to Authority and Influence: Australian Literary Criticism 1950-2000 edited by Delys Bird, Robert Dixon and Christopher Lee. This selection
of key documents in Australian literary criticism is unique. It signals an entirely new approach to the mapping of Australia's cultural and intellectual history. The book will be an essential text
for anyone studying Australian literature at tertiary level, both in Australia and overseas, and for those engaged in teaching literature at any level.

Big Bother: Why Did That Reality TV Show Become Such a Phenomenon?

This is chapter 1 of Big Bother: Why Did That Reality TV Show Become Such a Phenomenon? by Toni Johnson-Woods. Big Brother is watching you, but who is watching Big Brother, and why? Since 1999 the show has played more than 40 series in 20 countries, with three million Australians viewing the final episode. In the United Kingdom, more people voted for contestants than voted in the general election. What created the program's phenomenal mass appeal, and why do the media stir up such a 'big bother' whenever the program goes to air? What tricks did the producers use to manipulate the audience, and which ones did you fall for? Was Ben's big $250,000 win the result of fickle fan voting, or was it fated before the housemates even entered the house? How did Sara Marie become Australia's sweetheart, when she would have been evicted in the first week if Andy hadn't been more annoying? Big Bother answers these questions and more in an in-depth analysis of the Big Brother phenomenon. Not just a behind-the-scenes look at Australia's groundbreaking first series, this book is also a valuable companion for the subsequent series. '... Toni Johnson-Woods' Big Bother offers a refreshingly rigorous, and often reverent, work of research that is concerned with the production and reception of series one of Australian Big Brother.... Unlike many analysts who forecasted that Big Brother would be the beginning of the end for television, Johnson-Woods' blend of academic inquiry and detailed yet accessible reportage, contextualises this media event (rightfully) within its broad web of stakeholders. There is much within Big Bother for both media analysts and fans of Big Brother. This book makes a useful contribution to the growing scholarship on reality television and to the genre of the 'cross-over text' - its accessible style should result in it having appeal beyond the academy.' - Kate Douglas, JAS Review of Books

Black and White Together FCAATSI: The Federal Council for the Advancement of Aborigines and Torres Straight Islanders, 1958-1972

This is chapter 1 of Black and White Together FCAATSI: The Federal Council for the Advancement of Aborigines and Torres Straight Islanders, 1958-1972. In the l950s Australia
considered itself the land of the fair go. However, this was not the experience of Indigenous Australians who were excluded from the vote, equal wages, education and social services. Action against
such disparity came in 1958 with the creation of the grassroots organisation, the Federal Council for the Advancement of Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders, whose founding members were black
and white. As the first national lobby group of its kind, it achieved sweeping social and legislative reforms for Indigenous Australians. Over the next decade, unions, religious groups, communists,
students, artists and activists joined in the timely alliance, campaigning for inclusive civil rights and land rights. Conflicting ideologies and shifts in leadership strained the group's harmony
and effectiveness. With the advent of black power politics and the Tent Embassy, FCAATSI became an Indigenous body and the inter-racial coalition came to an end. This rigorously researched and
absorbing book on Australia's pre-eminent Indigenous civil rights organisation began as an oral history and contains rare interviews with former members and strategists, including Faith Bandler,
Charles Perkins, Stan Davey, Shirley Andrews and Joe McGinness.

Chinese Women and the Global Village

This is the introduction and bibliography to Chinese Women and the Global Village by Jan Ryan. This, the first major study of Chinese women in Australia, is all about global
journeys and perspectives. It is also a story of various sites that connect Australia to the pathways of women of Chinese ancestry. Focusing on the post 1970s, this is a narrative that does
not begin or end with Australia. Chinese women and the global village is a rich source of information, ideas and controversies, building on a wide-range of sources. It is at once
compelling, challenging and confronting. Jan Ryan interrogates issues of ethnicity, gender and identity to present the diversity and complexity of the personal and working lives of women of
Chinese heritage. Her study looks at, among other things, how differing birthplaces, homelands, and a sense of being 'Chinese' influence identity formation, family construction and work
environments, demonstrating what it means to be a woman of Chinese ancestry in Australia. With birthplaces from all over the globe, with networks and family positioned around the world,
with forced or voluntary migration, with pilgrimages, business, education, family visits, and accessibility to communications, many women network, retain and forge international contacts.
This is the most distinctive and significant change that distinguishes Chinese women in Australia since the 1970s from their predecessors.
